Disinfectants; EPA Lacks Assurance They Work

Disinfectants are used to kill germs on inanimate surfaces and objects inhospitals, schools, restaurants, and homes. Because users cannot see whether disinfectants kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses, the use of ineffective disinfectants poses a threat to public health and wastes consumer dollars. Mounting concerns about whether hospital and household disinfectants work as claimed and the adequacy of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) disinfectants program led the House Committee on Gov earnment Operations to request that GAO review EPA'S regulation of the efficacy of disinfectants.
