Poly(thiophosphazenes): New Inorganic Macromolecules with Backbones Composed of Phosphorus, Nitrogen, and Sulfur Atoms.

Macromolecules that contain backbones consisting entirely of inorganic elements are of considerable interest from the viewpoint of their unusual physical properties and their potential function as precursors to ceramic materials. Here we report the ring-opening polymerization of a compound containing a skeletal sulfur atom in addition to phosphorus and nitrogen. This provides a synthetic route to a new class of inorganic macromolecules the poly(thiophosphazenes).
