O,O-diethylmethylphosphonite (TR) is one of several decomposition products of O-ethyl-o'-(diisopropylaminoethyl) methylphosphonite (QL). There is concern that accidental release of QL and/or agents associated with it's manufacture, including TR, may result in untoward health effects in exposed personnel. Therefore, investigations have been conducted to determine the acute (Vernot et al., 1984) and subchronic (McNamara et al., 1981) inhalation toxicity of QL. The acute toxicity of several compounds associated with QL also has been determined; these include triethylphosphonite (TEP), diisopropylaminoethanol (KB), bis(diisopropylaminoethyl)phosphonite (LT) and TR (Kinkead et al., 1987). In the latter investigation occular and dermal irritation, as well as acute oral and inhalation toxicity of these compounds was determined, with the exception of the inhalation toxicity of TR. The acute inhalation toxicity of TR was not determined due to the necessity for further characterization of its chemical instability in air.
