Direction Response of Long Vaned Current Meters in Wave Zones

The direction response of a long vane in a current field composed of a meancurrent and an oscillating component (from surface waves, for example) has long been a matter of conjecture. As some types of current meters employ long vanes, the resolution of this question is of some importance. In this paper, the vane response is modeled by a nonlinear second order ordinary differential equation. Numerical solutions of this equation have been computed for three types of extreme situations and the results indicate that serious direction errors will occur only under conditions of very severe storms.
