Acoustic Imaging of Biological and Physical Processes Within Gulf Stream Meanders

The western edge of the Gulf Stream has long interested oceanographers because ofthe dynamic biological and physical nature of its associated frontal region. BioSYNOP is an Office of Naval Research program organized to address the biological and physical dynamics that dominate the Gulf Stream's western edge. Our intention here is to present a small but illustrative portion of this total program pertaining to a single cruise in April 1989. Results from this cruise illustrate the distribution of zooplankton and nekton and their coupling to the physical structure of a Gulf Stream meander.
