2-D Fourier transforming acoustooptic signal processors, for simultaneousdirection finding (DF) and spectrum analysis of radar signals over a wide instantaneous bandwidth, are shown to be useful for Radar Electronics Support Measures (ESM) applications. A comprehensive treatment on the analysis and design of two general 2-D acoustooptic architectures is provided. In one architecture, a linear antenna array is employed, and in the other a novel circular antenna array with a Butler matrix beamformer is used. Emphasis is placed on the DF characteristics of both architectures. The effects of scaling factor, acoustic transducer height, Gaussian laser illumination profile, RF input noise, amplitude and phase tracking errors on the DOA pattern produced by each architecture are addressed. Design criteria and comparison between the two architectures are also provided.
