The performance of seven yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal materials in the800 C to 1200 C temperature range was examined using stepped-temperature stress-rupture tests. The strength in this temperature range was significantly lower than the room temperature strength. This is due to a decrease in the chemical driving force for the tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation. As a result, these materials are not suitable for high temperature structural applications. At these temperatures the strength is controlled by microstructural parameters such as grain size, grain size distribution, and porosity. Keywords: Ceramic materials. (aw)
