It has been proposed that source localization in passive sonar be accomplishedvia some form of Matched Field Processing (MFP). Full-coherent, Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) MFP assumes complete and perfect characterization of the underwater multipath propagation channel and is known to be extremely sensitive to mismatch between model parameters and actual environmental parameters. We present a minimax, multi-rank signal variation of MVDR MFP referred to as Semi-coherent MVDR MFP. Simulation results are presented demonstrating Semi-coherent MVDR MFP to be both relatively robust to mismatch, with respect to relative amplitudes and phases amongst multipath arrivals, and comparable in performance to Full-coherent MVDR MFP under no mismatch conditions.
