New physical phenomena that are observed in polyanilines that make itsubstantially different from the other class of conducting polymers (like polyacetylene and polythiophene) are attributed to the key role of the ring torsion angle and its coupling to electronic energy states, the presence of nitrogen atoms within the chain, and the absence of charge conjugation symmetry. As a result, new phenomena are observed, and many unusual combinations of polymer properties and electronic properties exist.
