Investigation of the Medical Record Processing System at Walter Reed Army MedicalCenter (Final Report, July 1990-July 1991)

The medical record processing system at Walter Reed Army Medical Center is anintegral part of one of the largest hospitals in the Department of Defense. The inability to process inpatient records within 30 days, in accordance with the standards of Joint commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare organizations, was identified as the problem. This problem was studied using a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods. The results indicate that the current methods and procedures are adequate to support timely record processing but that there are few incentives for prompt completion of Inpatient Treatment Records.
