摘要

In this report, we discuss the ion/surface chemistry that is detected when gas-phase polyatomic ions, of well-defined mass, structure, and collision energy, collide with a self-assembled monolayer of alkanethiol on gold at collision energies of < 100 electron volts. A surface modified by a self-assembled monolayer of an alkanethiol on gold is shown to drastically reduce the relative amount of chemical sputtering that occurs when polyatomic gas-phase ions collide with this surface. However, chemical reactions, such as alkyl addition to benzene-d6, are still possible between certain projectile ions and the self-assembled monolayer.
