Research has been involved in exploring new ionization methods for atmosphericpressure detection. This has been geared towards enhanced sensitivity and selectivity for monitoring of very specific classes of compounds such as phosphoroorganic compounds, i.e. chemical warfare agent analogs, explosives analogs and small neurotransmitter compounds. The obvious orientation of the work has been towards developing new methods for monitoring various classes of compounds of direct interest to the Army. In order to enhance selectivity for target molecules against background in real detection environments, resonant two-photon ionization has been explored for various -NO2 containing aromatics as well as other related species. In order to enhance the efficiency of ionization, atmospheric pressure DC and RF flow discharge sources have been studied.
