Novel Synthesis of Unusual Classes of Fluorocarbon Organosulfur Compounds UsingElemental Fluorine as a Reagent

The reactions of elemental fluorine with branched alkyl mercaptans,alkanesulfonyl fluorides, alkyl thioethers, cyclic alkyl thioethers, alkyl sulfones, and an alkanesultone have been studied. The synthesis and characterizations of perfluoro isobutylsulfur pentafluoride, perfluoroneopentylsulfur pentafluoride, perfluoropropylsulfur pentafluoride, perfluorotetramethylenesulfur tetrafluoride, perfluoro 1,4 thioxane tetrafluoride, perfluoro 2 propanesulfonyl fluoride, 1,1,1,3,3,3 hexafluoro 2 propanesulfonyl fluoride, perfluorotetramethylene sulfone, perfluorobutanesulfonyl fluoride, perfluoro 1,4 butane sultone, and perfluoropropanesulfonyl fluoride are discussed. The 19-F and 13-C(19-F) NMR assignments of the fluorinated products are also reported.
