Review of Army Food Related Operations in Hot Desert Environments

The climate and terrain in the Operation Desert Shield/Storm (ODS) area ofoperations are typical for a low, hot desert. This study examined how dry, windy environment has significant impact on feeding and food management. In order to identify specific issues associated with this type environment, a literature review was conducted. The literature review led to several conclusions and recommendations which could be applied immediately to improve the quality and acceptability of food and ensure adequate fluid intake thus ensuring adequate consumption and reducing the probability of heat casualties among ODS personnel. Strategies to ensure that personnel exercise necessary discipline toward maintaining optimum hydration and nutritional status should be implemented as soon as possible.
