Design Considerations for the Diode-pumped Laser Ignition Project.

This technical note explores the design of the monolithic neodymium (Nd): yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser used in the diode-pumped laser ignition system (DPLIS). Emphasis is placed on the divergence of the output beam and the dependence of the output power on misalignment of the mirrors polished on the two ends of the rod. A tradeoff between divergence and misalignment tolerance is identified and quantified. With input from the manufacturer on fabrication cost, the optimum design can be determined.
