The objectives of this program were to investigate the relationships among phaseequilibria, kinetics, mechanisms and microstructural development in chemically bonded ceramics which exhibit cementing properties. This objective was based on the need to identify the above relationships if advanced cement-based materials are to be developed. Although cements are normally regarded as civil engineering materials, this view is unduly limited. Emphasis in this program was on the broader objectives of near net shape fabrication at low temperature. The use of the term 'cement-based' is intended to imply that the reactions leading to microstructural development occur in an aqueous environment. Emphasis was on non-civil engineering materials, as such these materials are called chemically bonded ceramics.
