Development of Fuel Neutralizing Agents to Prevent Flashback on Aircraft Fires

The object of this study was to explore chemical modification of extinguishantscurrently used against postcrash fuel-fed fires to inhibit reignition, i.e., improve 'burnback' control, without compromising the efficacy of flame knockdown. A formulation was developed as an additive to AFFF, for delivery during fire extinguishment which succeeded in 16-inch laboratory trials, but not to the same extent in 6-foot field tests. Several causes were considered and reformulation recommended. Three other approaches, each with formulations, also showed potential for significant reduction of fuel reignition if administered subsequent to flame knockdown by AFFF. One permits resealing by AFFF, another, instant emulsification of water and JP-4, and a third, gelling of the fuel.
