Variations in Weapons Instruction: A Case Study of Dragon Gunnery

For this report, the training resources and instructional methods used to trainDragon (an antiarmor weapon) gunners at four different locations were documented and compared for consistency and to Army guidelines. Army and Marine Corps institutional training, and Army mechanized and nonmechanized unit training were formally observed. Training tanks, instructional and testing procedures, and times differed across sites, indicating that standardization of instruction is difficult to achieve. Results were used as the basis for a training impact analysis of the advanced antitank weapon system-medium (AAWS-M), the replacement system for Dragon.
