Previous studies of spray formed material at the Carderock Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Annapolis Detachment, have indicated that porosity is one of the few component characteristics affected by changes in process parameters. As a result, porosity has often been directly linked to quality. In this paper, the relationship between porosity and mechanical properties is examined in an effort to prove that porosity does indeed indicate quality. In general, increases in porosity lead to decreases in strength and hardness. This allows the generalization that higher porosity levels indicate lower quality material.
