The gas protective properties of an AstroCarb 200 NBC filter which is used in theM-frigate were evaluated according to the NATO document 'Performance specification for a ships NBC filtration system' NATO/AC/225 (Panel VII, ASPWGE-1), March 7th 1990. The applied air conditions were twofold: either as described in the document or as used in the M-frigate: 40 C and 50% RH. The NBC filter, made by AAF International B.V., is made up of a gas filter and a particle filter. The gas filter consists of a series of Norithene plates which basically form an immobilized carbon bed. The challenge experiments with the prescribed toxic gases: hydrogen cyanide, cyanogen chloride and chloropicrine and a non-toxic approved simulant for sarin, dimethyl methylphosphonate, were all performed under ideal flow conditions on small-scale models made up from the same Norithene material. The flow efficiency in the filter was tested against an ideal smallscale model, allowing a valid statement on the compliance with the NATO document. The filter proved to easily fulfill the required breakthrough times for all tested gases. The bump test did not affect the gas filter's performance.
