Development of New Laser Protective Dyes. Phase 2

The overall purpose of this research effort is to develop dyes that: arecompatible with optical grade plastic that can be manufactured into lens devices and will provide protection for the eye against lasers that emit in the region from 700 nm to 1100 nm. One of the major problems with dyes available for this purpose is that they are thermally and photochemically unstable. In Steadfast's Phase I research, the feasibility of thermally stabilizing cyanine and squarylium dyes for simulated polycarbonate injection molding conditions was demonstrated, justifying the continuation of Steadfast's dye synthesis and evaluation program. In Phase II, the synthesis and stabilization of new laser-protective dyes is planned. Research will continue to focus on dyes that absorb in the near-infrared (NIR) region.
