Studies of Campylobacter Infection in the Adult Rabbit

In the early 1980's Campylobacter species were clearly emerging as a major causeof diarrheal disease. However, nothing was known about the colonization and pathogenesis factors of these organisms, nor were sufficient data available to permit development of immunoprophylactic measures against them. For these reasons we began a search for small laboratory animal models which would be amendable for these evaluations. We found that adult rabbits were suitable for investigation of some pathophysiologic and immunologic processes associated with Campylobacter jejuni infection.
