The Advanced Instructional Design Advisor (AIDA) will provide automated andintelligent assistance to inexperienced computer-based instruction developers. This report outlines initial development of a prototype or XAIDA as opposed to development of a complete automated Instructional System Design (ISD) expert system. One of the difficulties in automating-instructional design is with the proper application of ISD. The first part of this paper offers a detailed description of a potential ISD model for XAIDA in which three basic forms of knowledge, declarative, procedural, and contextual, are directly tied to instructional strategies. The final section of the paper specifies conditions for the development of XAIDA. 'epitomizes' XAIDA by presenting general 'simplifying conditions' to restrict such things as task, time to teach, learning level, medium, environment, and instructional strategy. The final portion of this paper applies these general conditions to a specific task by outlining the development of a lesson for the T-38 engine starting system.
