There is considerable interest in the properties that can be achieved withproperly compatibilized blends of nylon 6 with ABS materials. Recently described approaches involve incorporation of a functionalized polymer into the SAN phase of the ABS which contains group that will react with the polyamide during processing to form block or graft copolymers at the interface. The purpose is to gain control of morphology and interfacial adhesion. The design of such reactive compatibilizers raises fundamental issues about miscibility, functionality, and molecular weight. The work described here is part of a systematic effort to understand how various factors influence morphology generation and interfacial behavior. The main focus will be on the synthesis and evaluation of short chains having functional groups only at the chain ends so that block copolymers are formed by reaction with the polyamide. These will be compared with longer chains with higher numbers of functional groups per chain.
