Solidification/stabilization (S/S) of chromium in contaminated soils has provento be one of the more intractable problems in applying S/S technology. This is particularly true when attempting to reduce the mobility of the chromium VI ion. The evaluation problem is compounded by the availability of numerous proprietary S/S mixes. This paper describes a study in which eight formulations were evaluated for their ability to reduce the mobility of chromium III an chromium VI. The physical and contaminant release properties of a generic formulation and formulations provided by seven vendors were evaluated in a rigidly controlled study conducted at the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The suite of physical tests included unconfined compressive strength, wet/dry durability, permeability, moisture content, Atterberg limits, Proctor density, bulk density, specific gravity, slump, cracking, bleed water, and resistance to penetration.
