Concept for a Personal Biological Monitor (PBM)

There is a CF requirement for a biological detection system to provide rapidwarning and identification of potential threat aerosols in the battlefield. Detection and deployment lessons learned during DRES participation in the 1990-91 Persian Gulf conflict reenforced the current approach to BW detection. In this approach, a light scattering device provides rapid warning of the presence of unusual aerosols while immunological methods provide confirmatory identification information. Following this trend, we have selected commercial miniaturized versions of detection and identification instrumentation which could be used to make a Personal Biological Monitor (PBM). A novel immunobead technology is employed to provide relatively quick identification without lengthy or complicated procedures. The whole battery powered PBM is projected to be easily carried by the user as a 1 kg package measuring 10 x 10 x 5 cm. This paper presents original ideas for construction a PBM as well as methods to enhance aerosol particle discrimination.
