In the post-Cold War world, Russia's new military in transition will be compelledby a number of factors to develop into a smaller, more professional, mostly volunteer force in which Russian nationalism will be an over-arching and unifying principle. This process will occur almost in spite of changes in the Russian leadership, the economy and shifting threat perceptions. U.S. influence, while limited, can impact the future character of the force by accelerating the development of those positive factors identified in the study....
