Description of Preliminary Cook-off Experiment of Type IV Pipes Filled with TNT(Een Beschrijving van de Inleidende Cook-off Experimenten met TNT Gevulde TYpe IV Buizen)

Seven Cook-off experiments and a static pressure test with test-cylinder IV werecarried out during the second half of 1991. In this report a brief description of the Cook-off test setup and preparing activities to perform the Cook-off test are given. A detailed description of the experiments and their results together with some modifications for future experiments are also presented. The objective of the research program is first to gather some experience and to obtain insight from Cook-off experiments. The ultimate goal is to develop a well-instrumented Cook-off test for qualification and classification of explosives. Finally, with this type of tests, it is possible to obtain insight in the Cook-off phenomenon itself, i.e., to predict the response of explosives subject to thermal heating. Some of these seven experiments gave a sudden temperature drop as a result of a nearly adiabatic expansion of the TNT caused by a leak. The temperature measurement itself is not yet optimal and the temperature controller is not capable of giving a constant heating rate during the experiment. Despite these difficulties, the tests gave us a good insight in how to improve the test setup for future use. The test setup also provides information about the temperature gradient inside the explosive substance, which is necessary to study and simulate the Cook-off processes. Future experiments will be carried out with a new temperature controller, new thermocouple modules and a new construction of the caps.
