Effects of Unmodified and Cross-Linked Stroma Free Hemoglobin Solutions on Blood Pressure and Renal Function in the Hypotensive Rat

We have examined the short term systemic and rental effects of stroma free hemoglobin in anesthetized rats following hemorrhagic hypotension. Two forms of SFH, one unmodified and thd rental effects of stroma free hemoglobine other modified by intramolecular crosslinking (o-raffinose polyhemoglobin) were compared. Both the unmodified and modified forms of SFH increased MAP in the hypotensive rats from 61 +/- 6 to 111 +/- mm Hg and from 56 +/- 4 to 96 +/- 5 mm Hg respectively. Furthermore, the reduction in GFR associated with hemorrhage was reversed by both SFH solutions.
