The efficient photocatalytic oxidative degradation of alcohols and amines on TiO2suspended in moist, aerated acetonitrile leads to the formation of aldehydes, ketones, and imines as the initial isolable products. The relevance for the course of photooxidation of pre-adsorption equilibria and of the thermodynamic driving force for interfacial hole trapping, which differ significantly for these functional groups, is analyzed. Factors controlling the kinetic competition for active sites on the surface of a heterogeneous TiO2 photocatalyst are discussed.
