Wavelength-Encoded Processing in Semiconductor Lasers

It was the goal of this proposal to study the process of wavelength conversionand wavelength encoded processing in semiconductor laser types of devices. In particular, we report on (1) the implementation of Boolean logic using wavelength encoded inputs, (2) the use of frequency modulation to control the transmission of a Fabry-Perot laser, (3) nonlinear spectral filtering of a multi-wavelength signal, (4) wavelength-conversion and logic operation based on bistable diode laser amplifiers, including a study of crosstalk, switching power, bit-error-rates, and demonstration of an optically controllable space-switch, (5) wavelength-conversion by a T-gate device, (6) wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing in a Fabry-Perot edge-emitting and vertical cavity surface emitting laser, and (7) high-speed polarization switching in vertical-cavity lasers.
