Approach to Understanding the Value of Parts

The objective of the Naval aviation logistics system is to keep Naval aircraftflying. That system has many parts, of which the Naval aviation depots (NADEPs) are but one. NADEPs maintain aircraft and repair some of their broken components. A key constraint on NADEP activities is materiel support-ensuring the availability of parts. Absence of key repair parts blocks the execution of repair schedules designed to meet the needs of the fleet, and, hence, has a direct effect on readiness. This report describes an approach to materiel management that has as a goal reduced NADEP turnaround time, as well as less excess materiel in the system.
