Projections of Battlefield Medical Casualties Among U. S. Marine Forces forVarious Theaters of Operations

Wounded-in-action (WIA), Killed-in-action (KIA), and disease/nonbattle injury(DNBI) data were extracted from the records of military operations spanning four decades to project casualty and illness rates for various operational scenarios. The resulting empirically-derived rates of casualties and illnesses were adjusted to reflect differences in terrain, weather, and disease incidence for various operational theaters. Projected rates of casualty incidence were highest in Southwest Asia, followed by East Asia and Europe. Disease rate projections were similar between Southwest Asia and East Asia, with Europe disease rate forecasts approximately half of those in the Asian regions. Casualty and disease rates varied with combat/support status of troops. Projected rates showed wide variations in the daily incidence of WIA and KIA.
