Hydrogen Sulfide Generation in Shipboard Oily-Water Waste: A Safety Hazard inShips

摘要

This report is intended to inform crews of the hazards arising from generation ofhydrogen sulfide gas in stored oily-water wastes in ships. It has been written with an audience of sailors in mind. Some background information on the cause of the problem is provided, and questions on the nature and toxicity of hydrogen sulfide answered. The process by which hydrogen sulfide is generated in oily-water waste is discussed and the sailor advised of what he can do to minimize the formation of this toxic gas. Finally, the main hazard from oily-water waste generated hydrogen sulfide is identified, and advice given on what to do in the event of a hazardous incident. jg.
