Tutorial on Set-Up and Communications Delays for all UHF SATCOM DAMA Modes ofOperation

The objective of this briefing is to address two specific requirements identifiedat the MILSATCOM Users Conference 93-1. These requirements are stated in a Joint staff tasking memorandum, Subject: Tasking Based on MILSATCOM Users Conference 93-1, dated 10 September 1993. Requirements (a) and (b) of that memorandum request that the following actions be taken: (1) Identify voice services supported by the UHF DAMA standards (MIL-STD-188-181 through 183). Describe access and utilization procedures, and how they will affect user resource allocation. (2) Develop a tutorial describing the call set-up and communications delays for all UHF DAMA modes of operation. This briefing presents the concept of UHF DAMA from both technical and layman's perspectives, provides information on the constraints of the two DAMA waveforms, and estimates the call set-up times and the magnitude of any communications delays for voice services. The major modes of voice service supported by the DAMA standards are identified, as well as a proposed method for allocating UHF SATCOM resources to user organizations.
