In an effort to optimize the structure and properties of particulate reinforcedmetal matrix composites (MMCs), a variety of processing techniques have evolved over the last two decades. Among these, spray atomization and deposition offers a unique opportunity to combine the benefits associated with powder metallurgy, such as microstructural refinement and alloying flexibility with in-situ processing, and under some conditions, near-net shape manufacturing. The technology of spray processing have evolved over the last decade, and as a result, there now exists a variety of spray-based methods. Spray processing of MMCs generally involves the mixing of reinforcements and matrix under non-equilibrium conditions; accordingly, this approach offers an opportunity to modify the properties of existing alloy systems, and to develop novel alloy compositions. In principle, such an approach should avoid the extreme thermal excursions and concomitant macrosegregation normally associated with other casting processes. The objective of this review is to discuss recent developments in the area of the spray atomization and deposition processing of MMCs, with particular emphasis on the synergism between processing, microstructure and mechanical properties. jg p1.
