Acute Toxicity Evaluation of Halon Replacement Trifluoroiodomethane (CFsub3I)

Trifluorojodomethane (CF3I) is being considered as a replacement compound forHalon 1301. The material would be used as a flooding agent for in-flight aircraft and electronic equipment fires and for fire extinguishment in confined spaces. A series of 4-h nose-only inhalation exposures were performed on F-344 rats at 1.0 and 0.5% CF3I. No signs of toxic stress were noted during or following exposure. Inhalation of CF3I at concentrations of 1.0 or 0.5% in the atmosphere did not result in any observable toxicological effects.
