Polymer electrolyte solutions, in the solid state, are currently used as theelectrolyte media for the construction of batteries for portable devices. In order to improve the efficiency of the batteries, it is important to understand, at a molecular level, the mechanism of electrical conduction in these polymer electrolytes. This remains a rather elusive goal despite intensive research. Recently, it has been proposed that ions such as Li+ with a short lifetime of coordinated groups (solvent or anions) in their first coordination shell ( approx. 10(exp-7) for Li+) when dissolved in polyethers of average molar mass lower than M = 3200 move by diffusion of the whole attached chain. This motion is in addition to local segmentational motion (or crankshaft movement) of the polymer which allows for a percolation mechanism. (jg).
