A high diffraction efficiency electro-optic phase grating is fabricated bydepositing transparent interdigital electrodes on a PLZT ceramic wafer. The underlying principle is the electrical field induced periodic change in refractive index of the wafer. The diffraction efficiency is controlled by an applied DC voltage. The zero-order light is completely shut off when the first-order diffraction reaches its maximum, with a voltage of 14OV. The preliminary analysis and experimental results are provided. This device can be used as a voltage-controlled switch in optical interconnects.
