Bioremediation Methods for Treatment of TNT Contaminated Soils.

TNT and its metabolites are the most important munition derived pollutants encountered at military installations. Remediation of sites contaminated with explosives are currently accomplished by incineration of the soil or by composting processes. The costs of incineration is too great to enable its widespread utilization and questions remain about the effectiveness of composting methods. Although biodegradation of the ring structure of TNT is not currently feasable, a novel method of binding TNT metabolites to soil may provide an effective and low-cost means of clean up.
