The use of high resolution methods of processing acoustic array data for sourcelocalization in shallow-water waveguide environments has been the focus of much research in recent years. It has been noted that, whereas these methods rely on sophisticated models of the acoustic environment, they are subject to degraded performance in the presence of mismatch, such as might occur when environmental parameters are incorrectly estimated. Estimators that have been analyzed in this way include Capon's 'maximum likelihood method' (MLM), also called the 'minimum variance distortionless response,' and the sector-focusing' method (SFM) of Byrne. (AN).
