A self-contained mesoscale numerical weather prediction system which can generatereal-time or historical simulations on a high performance moderate-cost workstation computer was developed and tested in this project. Thee system is designed to: ingest a variety of atmospheric data types; combine the diverse mixture of ingested data into a dynamically consistent initialization data set for the numerical model; generate a mesoscale numerical simulation; display the output from the simulation in a variety of graphical and tabular formats; and be easily used and reconfigured through a graphical user interface. The system was created by porting a version of the Mesoscale Atmospheric Simulation System (MASS) from a supercomputer to a Standent 750 vector processing workstation, and then configuring it to perform all the functions of a numerical weather prediction system within the workstation environment. The system was tested by executing 36 simulations with real-time atmospheric data and performing a subjective and objective verification. In addition to the generation of real-time mesoscale simulations for military applications, it is envisioned that the workstation-based mesoscale simulation system could have a considerable number of application in the private sector including the generation of tailored local forecasts for business and government operations that are weather sensitive.
