Analysis of U.N. Peacekeeping in Cambodia

U.N. peacekeeping operations are analyzed by studying the large complex missionin Cambodia. Of all the large-scale missions attempted by the U.N., the only success was achieved in Cambodia. The lessons learned in Cambodia are being applied to missions throughout the world. This analysis reviews the background and development of the mission in Cambodia. An analytic checklist is developed to find the lessons learned, measure the effectiveness of a mission and provide a basis of comparison for other missions. By applying the analytic checklist to the mission in Cambodia a number of lessons for future missions are identified. The mission mandate must be clear and doable. Funding must be secured before deployment. The more complex the mission the more planning is needed. The were countries involved in a mission, the better the mission. Use grassroots approach to the people. Pick good mission leaders. Don't give up. Finally, use the media. Application of the analytic checklist and the lessons learned from it can provide the operational commander with a tool to measure and compare the effectiveness of future missions.
