A considerable fraction of the DNA in the world is in circular form. This can bestated with confidence because the genomes of most prokaryotic organisms are circular. Clearly, circular nucleic acids exhibit important differences in their properties as compared to linear nucleic acids, or this topological form would not be selected for by nature. For example, circular duplex DNAs undergo supercoiling, which plays an important role in control of gene expression and in replication.
