Is the Army Properly Postured to Support Commander in Chief Requirements forFuture Joint Task Force Headquarters Operations

The joint task force (JTF) headquarters (HQ) is normally a joint organizationtailored to meet contingency warfighting requirements for the Unified Commanders in Chief (CINCs). It involves two or more services normally for a limited objective and duration, and requires no centralized logistic support. While the Army has a long history of participation in joint operations, it has only been in the past two decades that joint task force operations have become commonplace. In today's strategic environment, the joint task force is perhaps the most likely organization in which Army forces and headquarters will participate in military operations. An analysis of current CINC requirements for joint task forces indicates that either an Army Corps HQ or Division HQ may be required as the base for a JTF HQ. While the Army is properly postured to support JTF operations in terms of organization and training, it needs to push for further joint doctrine initiatives and refine the procedures for the provision of HQ augmentees to a JTF HQ.
