Role of the Division Deep Operations Cell in Force Projection Operations

This study investigates the role of the division deep fires cell in a forceprojection operation. The concept is that given changes in the operational environment, new weapon systems, target acquisition systems, and command and control systems, the division deep operations cell faces complex new challenges. This study examines the relationship between the division and corps, and the relationship between the division and the joint air component commander. This study supports adding personnel to the Division Deep Operations Center (DDOC) to support the additional burden of conducting the deep battle on a non-linear battlefield. It also recommends that we develop permissive fire support coordination measures to facilitate the rapid engagement of deep targets. To support the increased emphasis on deep operations, this study recommends that division doctrine be modified to emphasize the growing trends towards the predominance of the deep battle in division operations, and the role of the DDOC in accomplishing the division commander's intent for deep operations.
