Object-Oriented Technology for Integrating Distributed Heterogeneous DatabaseSystems

This paper describes the application of object technology for heterogeneousdatabase integration. We first discuss the issues of integrating heterogeneous database systems and present a collection of some heterogeneous databases as they occur in the Joint Maritime Command Information System (JMCIS) as an example of a system that could benefit from this technology. Next, we describe the need for object technology and its application to handle schema heterogeneity and platform heterogeneity. In particular, we give an overview of the main features of an object-oriented model for integrating heterogeneous databases. We discuss the use of Object Management Group's Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) for resolving platform heterogeneity. Finally, we explore the directions for future research.
