Cultural Resources Investigations at Site 11-Jn-29l, Jefferson County, Illinois

Phase III excavations were conducted at site 11-Jn-291, Jefferson County, IL, bySouthern Illinois University. The site is located at Rend Lake, on Big Muddy River, on property owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, within an Illinois Department of Conservation Wildlife Management Area. Potential impacts to the site stem from long-wall mining activities by Consolidation Coal Company. Work included excavation of 108 half-meter square test units, and mechanized removal of the plow zone from trenches. The site is low density scatter of artifacts along a crest and ridge spur. No midden is present. No cultural features or diagnostic artifacts were recovered, but previous investigations yield 2 Late
