The use of the biomarkers for the cLassification and identification of bacteriais discussed. ResuLts on the pyrolysis-mass spectrometry of proteins, peptides, and fatty acids are described. In situ chemicaL reactions of fatty acids and fatty acid precursors using tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide produced fatty acid methyl ester (FADIE) distributions similar to those obtained from cLassical derivatization procedures. The FAME mass spectrometry data allowed for differentiation of Gram-positive and negative bacteria. Moreover, pathogenic bacteria were identified based on their FAME profiles generated using in situ derivatization in the Army's Chemical and Biological Mass Spectrometer. Three peer-reviewed papers and eleven oral presentations have resulted from the research.
