In order to study the assembly and polymerization of a mixed monomeric system theLangmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was implemented. The specific system involved in this investigation was a variety monomers of phenol, 4-tetradecyloxyphenol (Cl4PP), 4-hexadecylniline (Cl6PA), 4-ethyiphenol (C2PP), 4-hexadecyloxyphenol (C16PP), pyrrole and aniline at various ratios. Pressure-area isotherms of these monomers were measured and reported. The enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was the mediator for the polymerization, which, at 20.0 deg C, accomplished the synthesis of novel ultrathin polymeric films. UV-Vis spectroscopy, AFM, ellipsometry, TGA, conductivity, and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were measured to characterize the resulting monolayers, to determine the extent of conjugation, to assess the orientation of the alkyl chains with respect to the substrate surface for Langmuir-Blodgett (L-B) films with multilayers, to determine the film thickness, and to measure the conductive and the NLO properties.
